I think the first words out of my mouth were,”I can do it.” I wanted to get dressed, tie my shoes, and ride my bike by myself. But the challenging part about growing up to be self-reliant and wanting to do everything on your own is learning to be dependent on God. And it seems like the cycle continues. I raised my children to be self-reliant, missing the critical ingredients of leaning into God and total dependence on Him. And it can be that way; generation after generation of teaching independence and independent living.
Now at 51 years old, I am trying to fully surrender my life to God and wonder why it is so hard. It’s because I spent my entire life living independently. Maybe you have too.So how do we unlearn those words, “I can do it?” Perhaps it’s practicing, like the many hours I spent making the bows and looping it through or balancing on two wheels. I never gave up. May we never stop leaning into God and relying on Him. May we continue to practice dependent living in this independent world, remaining in the One who can do it all.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
