You know the experience of trying to get from Point A to Point B when there’s a detour. You follow the orange cones, signs and arrows that turn you left and then right, and before long you’ve come out on the other side of the construction zone, and you’re back on your way. I think a problem we face is that much of life is filled with detours. We go off course, winding our way around until we get back on the right road, and this happens day in and day out. Then, when it comes to salvation, it’s hard to believe that there is only one way to get there – through Jesus.
But people still stop and ask for directions: Are you sure it’s not through hard work? Are you positive that I can’t get there because I’m a good person? What about my money . . . I have a lot of money . . . Can’t I buy my way there? But the answer to all three is no. And aren’t you secretly glad? The greatest gift ever given is accessible to anyone and everyone; there’s just one way to get there – through the cross of Christ.
