My husband and I love to kayak. Last summer, we tried a new river at a nearby campground – the Muskegon River. As soon as I got in the water, I knew something was different. The current was much stronger than some of the other streams and rivers we’ve kayaked. Our lazy Saturday wasn’t going to be so lazy after all.
As we proceeded upstream, I asked the Lord to give me strength and, instead of listening to me grumble – to show me something. He is always faithful. He showed me that soon this river would be filled with people floating downstream on their tubes and rafts. He said in His quiet whisper to my heart, “what you are doing in this kayak is what it looks like living separate from the rest of the world -paddling upstream – going against the grain – being intentional in your walk with Me. It’s not easy. It takes work.”
I left that day grateful for my time with the Lord and for what He showed me on that river. Jesus’ parable of the wide and narrow gate came to life, and I was encouraged that even though following Jesus meant paddling upstream – it meant that I get to be with Him, not only now but for all eternity.
Today, I want to encourage you to keep paddling and never give up. It may be work, but worth it when we someday hear, “well done, my good and faithful servant. Welcome home.”
