I’ve had many different kinds of pride in my life. I had pride in my high school and our sports team. I’ve had pride in my jobs and the work I’ve done. And I’ve had pride in my children and how they were growing up. But to be proud of something or someone is different than so much pride you can’t ask for help or believe you don’t need God because you can do it alone. I’ve had that kind of pride, too.
How do we carry our cross, follow Jesus, and keep dragging around our pride? We can’t. When we look at Jesus’s life, He loved, served, and lived in humility and grace – humble before His Father and the world. He was willing to do anything His Father asked, not for His own glory – but for God’s. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” May we live in humility, lay down our pride, and do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. May it all be for His Glory.
