Have you ever heard someone say, “You’ll do this if you love me?” Often, we mistake this for love because we feel we’re not enough – maybe not worthy of love. And when we are not enough, we need to prove our love by doing what we’re asked, even when the person asking does not have our best intentions in mind but only theirs.
If we follow Jesus’ example, we need to love and be loved, as He loves us – unconditionally, without ulterior motives, sacrificially, and prayerfully – relying on the Father.
If you are currently in a relationship where you’re being told or you’re the one saying, “You’ll do this if you love me,” remember who loved you first and who knows your name. Let Jesus be your example that love is not self-seeking.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
