A painting of jesus holding a child in his arms.

When my children were growing up, I loved showing them love and making them feel safe. But I was also responsible for showing them the difference between right and wrong. I had to help point out areas where they were struggling and counsel them on their path. I had to teach them about love, life, boundaries, and God. And then it hit me yesterday – this is the heart of Father God. Somedays, we just want God to show us love. We don’t like the correction, the counsel, the teachings. We want the love and not the “parenting,” but that’s not His heart. And, I finally could see this – because it’s not my heart as a parent either. I finally realize that I want God to show me my mistakes. I want to keep learning and have an open heart to receive counsel from my Father God: to allow Him to pick me up, hold me close, and say, “OK. Let’s try this again.”
