When I was younger, I used to be afraid of the dark. My imagination would run wild, and I would conjure up things that might be hiding under my bed and in my closet. My heart would race, and my palms would get sweaty, and I would pull my covers up high over my head. When I look back over my childhood, there never was anything in the closet or under my bed, and I’ll never get those moments back when I was afraid for no real reason. But today, no matter where you turn, there is something you could be afraid of. The news is filled with bombings, shootings, bad weather, social injustice, COVID-19, and the list goes on and on. And then there are all the unknowns; financial, health, family, and our future. So how do we live without fear? How do we keep our focus on what’s true and not what may be lurking around the corner? If we look to our truth – God’s Word – Jesus tells us in John 14:27, “Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” To live without fear, we need to stop, let go of the fear, and exchange it for His peace. We need to remember that God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear; but of power, love, and a sound mind, as it tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7. Today, trust in His Word, and do not fear.
