When Moses was on Mt. Sinai for forty days and forty nights, receiving the Ten Commandments and the directions for the tent of meeting, the Israelites were restless.

“When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, ‘Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’” —Exodus 32:1

After reading this, I had such a mixture of emotions: anger at the Israelites for not waiting, disgust over their golden calf image, and sadness because I knew in my own heart that I had followed a golden calf in my life. We so long for physical evidence, something to see with our eyes. But what if our eyes fail us? Would we no longer be able to believe? True faith comes from inside us, in believing in Him more than in the proof we think we need.
