Have you ever wondered why God put such an emphasis on idols? In Exodus 20:22-23, He first mentions idols to the Israelites and then continues to express the necessity of keeping them out of their lives: “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites this: “You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or golds of gold.'”When I first read this, I remember thinking I would never keep a gold idol in my possession; this certainly doesn’t apply to me. But as the years went by, there were several things I looked to instead of God. While they weren’t gold statues, I found myself idolizing money, other’s people’s approval, and myself.God knew that we would easily be led astray if we didn’t keep our eyes on Him. So the emphasis is a warning and a reminder of the snare it will be to us to have idols.Today, take an inventory. Is there anything in your life that you go to before God? It’s never too late to make that correction and only look to Him.
